Frequently Asked Questions

We've got answers to a whole bunch of things including

Can you recommend...?

We've put together a comprehensive list of Service Providers on our website. Please reach out to them DIRECTLY for details about their services, turn-around times and pricing.

Quilt Repair - If you’re looking for quilt repair, especially heirloom repair/restoration, keep in mind that it’s very different from creating a custom quilt. You may want to contact one of our recommended custom quilt specialists for assistance.

For heirloom quilts, consider reaching out to the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, as they may have additional contacts to help with your needs.

Do you accept scrap donations?

Yes! We currently partner with Michelle (Sew for Love) who accepts fabric and batting scraps - but please, NO PINS OR NEEDLES!!

If they’re large, Michelle uses them to create various items, including charity quilts and pet beds. Smaller scraps are used for stuffing.

Please CALL US FIRST! We can only manage a limited number of donations at a time, and if Michelle is away, we are unable to store them. Thank you for understanding!

Do you offer discounts? Guild, military, frequent shopper?

We offer a Frequent Buyer Card, which is stamped dollar-for-dollar for regular-priced purchases. Once it's full, you’ll receive $25 OFF your next purchase at the shop!

  • Cards are stamped for regular-priced items only.
  • Cards are NOT stamped for items already discounted, classes, consignment, or sales tax.
  • The $25 discount MUST be used in full – any remaining balance is forfeited, as we cannot track partial amounts.
  • This is a physical card that will be stamped, so please keep track of it!

At this time, we do not offer guild, military, or senior discounts. Thank you for your understanding!

Do you ever rent your classroom?

When it's not being used for a class, we do rent it out. The cost is:

  • $5/person allows you, along with anyone else who wants to sign up use the room.
  • $50/day gets you (your group) the room exclusively.

The room comfortably fits 9 people if you are bringing machines. More if you're hand-stitching.

Do you offer retreats?

While we don’t host retreats at the shop, many groups do! One great option is the St. Francis Retreat Center, located just a couple of miles from us. It’s an ideal spot for retreats, with a spacious sewing/quilting room, charming rooms, and peaceful, beautiful grounds.

If you book a retreat, let us know! We’ll add your event to our shop calendar and even have a little treat waiting for you.

And while you’re there, keep an eye out for the Family Threads Quilt Shop brick in the pathway!

I'm hungry. What's around the shop?

You can also visit the town's website. It features a calendar of town events, restaurants, shopping, information about the mission and parks, where to stay and services the town offers. SanJuanBautistaCA.com

Recipes

Here are a few of our FAVORITE recipes! We’d love to share a picture, but every time we make them, they’re gone before we can snap one! Enjoy!

Cindy's Taco Salad

  • 1 head of lettuce
  • 1 cup or so grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 pound ground beef - cooked, drained and seasoned with taco seasoning
  • 1 small can of sliced olives, drained
  • 1 tomato cut up
  • 1 avacado cut up
  • 1 bag of tortilla chips (crushed - use about 1/2 the bag)

Taco Salad Dressing

  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Combine ingredients in large bowl, add Taco Salad Dressing (above) and toss. This recipe is usually enough for one full head of lettuce.
We think it's better to toss everything together right before serving so the chips don't get soggy.

Cindy's Farm Cookies

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups oats
  • 2 cups cornflakes OR rice krispies (we like rice krispies)
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup or so flaked dried cranberries

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt, soda and baking powder. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bake at 350º for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned. The original recipe says to roll into balls and flatten but we just spoon it out on the cookie sheet.

Darla's Cranberry-Orange Bread

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup orange juice or fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup chopped cranberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup coconut, optional
  • 1/2 cup raisins, optional

Cream butter, add flour, soda, salt, and sugar. Beat egg and add to the orange juice, then pour into flour mixture. Stir just enough to mix, do not beat. Add cranberries and nuts. Turn into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 350º for 1 hour.
