Frequently Asked Questions

We've got answers to a whole bunch of things including

Do you have any recommendations for services the shop doesn't provide?

We've created a whole list of Service Providers here on our website. Please contact them DIRECTLY to find out about their services, turn-around times and pricing.

Quilt Repair - You may want to call one of the people that does custom quilt work. Please know that repairing a quilt - especially heirloom repair/restoration - is MUCH different than making a custom quilt.

If you have an heirloom quilt, you may want to contact the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles as they might have more contacts than we do.

Do you take scrap donations?

We currently work with Michelle (Sew for Love) who takes fabric and batting scraps - NO PINS OR NEEDLES!!

If they’re large she uses them to make all sorts of things including charity quilts and pet beds. If they’re small she uses them for stuffing.

CALL US FIRST! We can only handle so many at a time and if Michelle is away at all we CANNOT store them.

Do you offer discounts - frequent buyers, guild, military, senior?

We have a Frequent Buyer Card and it's stamped dollar for dollar for purchases. Once it's full you'll receive $25 OFF your next purchase at the shop.

  • Cards are stamped for regular priced items.
  • Cards are NOT stamped for: items already discounted, classes, consignment or sales tax
  • $25 off MUST be used in its entirety or whatever balance is left is forfeited (we do not have a way to keep track of partial balances).
  • This is a physical card we stamp that you will need to keep track of.

We do not offer guild, military or senior discounts.

Do you ever rent your classroom out to groups? Individuals?

When it's not being used for a class, we do rent it out. The cost is:

  • $5/person allows you, along with anyone else who wants to sign up use the room.
  • $50/day gets you (your group) the room exclusively.

The room comfortably fits 9 people if you are bringing machines. More if you're hand-stitching.

Do you offer retreats?

The shop doesn't put on any retreats. However...

Lots of groups do! There's a wonderful retreat center - St Francis Retreat Center - located a couple miles from the shop. If you're looking for a place to host a retreat you might want to contact them. The sewing/quilting room is very spacious, the rooms are quaint and the grounds are incredibly peaceful and beautiful.

If you book a retreat, please let the shop know, we'll pencil you in on our shop calendar and even have a little treat.

And if you're up there, why not look for the Family Threads Quilt Shop brick in the pathway.

Where's a good place to eat that's near the shop?

You can also visit the town's website. It features a calendar of town events, restaurants, shopping, information about the mission and parks, where to stay and services the town offers. SanJuanBautistaCA.com

Recipes

Here's a few of our FAVORITE recipes. We wish we had a picture to share but every time they're made, they disappear before we can snap one!

Cindy's Taco Salad

  • 1 head of lettuce
  • 1 cup or so grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 pound ground beef - cooked, drained and seasoned with taco seasoning
  • 1 small can of sliced olives, drained
  • 1 tomato cut up
  • 1 avacado cut up
  • 1 bag of tortilla chips (crushed - use about 1/2 the bag)

Taco Salad Dressing

  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Combine ingredients in large bowl, add Taco Salad Dressing (above) and toss. This recipe is usually enough for one full head of lettuce.
We think it's better to toss everything together right before serving so the chips don't get soggy.

Cindy's Farm Cookies

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups oats
  • 2 cups cornflakes OR rice krispies (we like rice krispies)
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup or so flaked dried cranberries

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt, soda and baking powder. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bake at 350º for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned. The original recipe says to roll into balls and flatten but we just spoon it out on the cookie sheet.

Darla's Cranberry-Orange Bread

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup orange juice or fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup chopped cranberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup coconut, optional
  • 1/2 cup raisins, optional

Cream butter, add flour, soda, salt, and sugar. Beat egg and add to the orange juice, then pour into flour mixture. Stir just enough to mix, do not beat. Add cranberries and nuts. Turn into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 350º for 1 hour.
