Family Threads News - April 2024

Family Threads Quilt Shop banner

Hello everyone.

*****We had a little trouble with the newsletter - some didn't get it, some did and a few lucky ones got it multiple times. We have to start fresh with our list, so I do apologize for any inconvenience. *****

Looks like we're gearing up for camping season.

Who's that in our cover photo? Keira and Gruff. (You can read more below.) Why the teepee you say? Because it's fun and went with our new panels. Would you believe one's a little campfire set that includes s'mores and the other (not pictured) is a little bear backpack! So cute.

We're kicking off April with a sale! Read below for all the details.

Does spring motivate you to take a little drive to San Juan Bautista? The hills are beautiful and green right now. The alternative is to get a little yard maintenance done or wash the windows - doesn't sound like as much fun. I'll be sewing.

Feel like getting a few friends together? Our classroom might be the perfect meeting place and is available for a nominal fee. Please call to schedule a sew date.

Well then we hope to see you soon!

Keira and Gruff

A few of you may have seen a lovely new face here at the shop.

We thought we'd formally introduce Keira.

She's working limited hours while she goes to school but once summer gets here you'll probably see more of her.

And being such a good sport, she puts up with our antics. This is what it REALLY takes to get a dog in a teepee for newsletter cover photo.

CLASS (3 WEEKENDS)
QUILTING 101 - Sophie's Delight

If you've wanted to learn to quilt, here's your chance. Aneda and Joanna will be here over the course of three weekends showing you how to choose fabric, quilting tool basics - using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat together to cut block pieces, how to sew "quilters" seams using the proper measurement and different techniques. Of course they'll be throwing in tips and tricks too.

While this is beginning quilting, you need to know how to use your sewing machine BEFORE class. You do not have to know all the in’s and out’s, but please come to class knowing at the very least how to turn your machine on, thread your machine and wind a bobbin. Also, quilting is based on using a 1/4” seam, so please make sure your machine has a 1/4” foot.

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: 3 WEEKENDS - Saturday AND Sunday April 20, 21, May 18, 19 (Last weekend to be announced)
  • Time: 10:30 am - 4:30 pm (the shop actually closes at 3:00 pm and is closed on Sunday; so you'll be here after hours with the instructors)
  • Cost: $185
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Instructor(s): Aneda Phillips and Joanna Johnson
  • Pre-class homework: At the end of each class, instructions for pre-cutting supplies for the next class will be given. So yes, there’s some homework.
  • Supplies: Fabric - (8) 1/2 yard pieces, 1-1/2 yards of background, starch, small iron and ironing mat + basic sewing/quilting supplies; Pattern included with the class.

CLASS (WEEKEND)
CACTUS WREATH

This beautiful quilt starts with a medallion and grows from there. The pattern offers three sizes – wall hanging 60” square, throw 72” square and queen 92” square. You can use any colors for your strips - pick from a collection for a coordinated look or go for scrappy.

During this class you’ll be shown how to make the blocks and put the quilt together. You will probably not have a completed quilt in 2 days.

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: Saturday, April 27 AND Sunday, April 28
  • Time: 10:30 am - 4:30 pm (the shop actually closes at 3:00 pm and is closed on Sunday; so you'll be here after hours with the instructors)
  • Cost: $80
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Instructor(s): Aneda Phillips and Joanna Johnson
  • Pre-class homework: Cut out fabric per pattern instructions
  • Supplies: Pattern, fabric according to pattern, starch, small iron and ironing mat + basic sewing/quilting supplies; OPTIONAL (but QUITE handy) Creative Grids Corner Clipper Ruler

CLASS
STAINED GLASS - FORGET-ME-KNOT

Sheila's back teaching another Stained Glass class. Don't worry, no glass cutters needed - just black bias tape! You'll be working on a table runner and it's actually a quilt-as-you-go. So once the bias tape is sew on you'll just have to attach the binding and enjoy!
Measures 16 x 44

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: Saturday, June 1
  • Time: 10:30 am - 2:30
  • Cost: $35
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Instructor(s): Sheila Galindo
  • Pre-class homework
  • Supplies: Pattern Forget-Me-Not; Background 1/2 yard, Four fat quarters + 1/8 yard (braids), flowers - about a fat quarter for each; binding 1/4 yard; Clover Fusible Quick Bias Black 1/4in; SF101 18 x 48; black thread + basic sewing/quilting supplies

WORD OF THE MONTH

MORGENMUFFEL

She was not a sunrise quilter, in fact she was a morgenmuffel. But once evening hit - watch out, she could stitch anyone under the table.

DEFINITION
A person who is grumpy and doesn't like to wake up early in the morning.

Each week our good friends at Machine Medics come to pick up/drop off your sewing machines.

Each week Luis (with Karen's help sometimes) brings us a word and we have to figure out the definition. It's now become a source of entertainment we thought we'd share.

Thank you for supporting Family Threads Quilt Shop.
We are now in our 14th year.
We appreciate you so very much and look forward to seeing you soon.
