Family Threads News - May 2024

Family Threads Quilt Shop banner

Well we'll hope the newsletter is working correctly this month. In April we had a little trouble and some of you didn't get it while a few of you got it multiple times. We are starting over and do apologize for any inconvenience.

The first two weeks of May just slipped by me. I did get away for a few days with some quilty gals, those machines were just a humming...of course our conversations were a bit louder! A most enjoyable weekend.

No more big downtown events in San Juan Bautista, so business hours are back as usual.

We have lots of new fabrics arriving, so exciting, makes me want to sew even faster (if that's possible).

I won't be singing in the Oriana Chorale until fall, but they do have a spring Concert May 17 and 19 at Christ Fellowship Church in Hollister. Tickets are available at the door. It's so beautiful I'll be sure to attend, and if you get a chance, I hope you will too.

Well then, we hope to see you soon!

Simply Cindy

Simply Cindy is a monthly hands-on class (not just a demo) where you'll make a small project. Each month Cindy will be picking something different but simple.

The class will meet the 4th Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise noted). You'll need to bring your sewing supplies including your machine. You can also bring a snack if you'd like as there will be no scheduled lunch break.

We're offering two options. $35 with the kit, $20 without. If you chose the version without the kit, you'll still need to purchase the pattern.

While beginners are welcome, you need to know how to use your sewing machine BEFORE class. You do not have to know all the in’s and out’s, but please come to class knowing at the very least how to turn your machine on, thread your machine and wind a bobbin. Also, quilting is based on using a 1/4” seam, so please make sure your machine has a 1/4” foot.

  • Date: 4th Wednesday - Starting May 22
  • Time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm
  • Cost: $35 (includes kit); $20 (no kit provided you bring your own supplies)
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Instructor(s): Cindy
  • Pre-class homework: N/A
  • Supplies: Vary according to the monthly project + basic sewing/quilting supplies

CLASS (WHOLE WEEKEND)
QUILT CAMP

We thought we'd do something a little different. Quilt Camp is a weekend here at the shop (sorry, there aren't any actual tents or s'mores) in which you can choose from previous projects hanging in our classroom:
• Cactus Wreath (quilt)
• Fruit Salad (quilt)
• Evergreen (table runner)
• Wind Blown (quilt)
• Super Nova (quilt)

You'll be chatting with Aneda beforehand so that she's all ready for whatever project you choose from the list.

And to set expectations, if you choose one of the quilts you'll be well on your way to completing the top, but finishing during the two days depends entirely on how quickly you sew.

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: Saturday AND Sunday May 18, 19
  • Time: 10:30 am - 4:30 pm (the shop actually closes at 3:00 pm and is closed on Sunday; so you'll be here after hours with the instructors)
  • Cost: $80
  • Skill Level: Confident Beginner/Intermediate
  • Instructor(s): Aneda Phillips and Joanna Johnson
  • Pre-class homework
  • Supplies: Vary depend on what you pick + basic sewing/quilting supplies

CLASS
STAINED GLASS - FORGET-ME-KNOT

Sheila's back teaching another Stained Glass class. Don't worry, no glass cutters needed - just black bias tape! You'll be working on a table runner and it's actually a quilt-as-you-go. So once the bias tape is sew on you'll just have to attach the binding and enjoy!
Measures 16 x 44

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: Saturday, June 1
  • Time: 10:30 am - 2:30
  • Cost: $35
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Instructor(s): Sheila Galindo
  • Pre-class homework
  • Supplies: Pattern Forget-Me-Not; Background 1/2 yard, Four fat quarters + 1/8 yard (braids), flowers - about a fat quarter for each; binding 1/4 yard; Clover Fusible Quick Bias Black 1/4in; SF101 18 x 48; black thread + basic sewing/quilting supplies

CLASS (WHOLE WEEKEND)
HERITAGE BLOSSOMS

In this full weekend class you'll be working on Heritage Blossoms. While the book actually shows the quilt in reproduction-type fabrics, Aneda's made the class sample in reds, sweet florals, a bit of green and a touch of pink. The block is large (20 x 20) but you'll only be making nine, adding sashing and a bit of a border (which simplifies it from the original in the book).

You will leave knowing how to make a block and put the quilt together, but you probably won't have a finished quilt by the end of class.

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 6) for this class to happen.

  • Dates: Saturday AND Sunday June 8, 9
  • Time: 10:30 am - 4:30 pm (the shop actually closes at 3:00 pm and is closed on Sunday; so you'll be here after hours with the instructors)
  • Cost: $80
  • Skill Level: Confident Beginner
  • Instructor(s): Aneda Phillips and Joanna Johnson
  • Pre-class homework
  • Supplies: Book - Simple Double-Dipped Quilts by Kim Diehl (we offer for 20% off), Creative Grids Corner Clipper Ruler (small size) ; Fabric (see page 83 in book) + basic sewing/quilting supplies

WORD OF THE MONTH

SUSURRUS

The susurration of the room suddenly stopped when the instructor started a demo they'd all been eagerly waiting to see.

DEFINITION
A soft murmuring or rustling sound; whisper.

Each week our good friends at Machine Medics come to pick up/drop off your sewing machines.

Each week Luis (with Karen's help sometimes) brings us a word and we have to figure out the definition. It's now become a source of entertainment we thought we'd share.

Thank you for supporting Family Threads Quilt Shop.
We are now in our 14th year.
We appreciate you so very much and look forward to seeing you soon.
