Family Threads News - June 2024 - Shop Hop by the Bay

Family Threads Quilt Shop banner

June brings exciting things in the quilting world. Holiday fabrics are arriving and it's never to early to start stitching gifts. Nothing beats a gift from the hands and heart. Who couldn't use a new bowl cozy, potholder, bag or table runner. Or why not a quilt to cozy up under. We will continue to stitch samples and make kits.

Shop Hop by the Bay starts this Wednesday June 19 and goes to Saturday June 22. Participating shops will be open from 10-5 each day. If you haven't participated before, here's a little rundown...
(1) At your first stop (here's a list of participating shops) you'll receive a passport and free pattern.
(2) At each shop you visit your passport will be stamped. You'll receive two coordinating strips of fabric to use in the project from the free pattern you got at your first stop.
(3) At the last shop you visit, turn in your completed passport (here are the official rules) and receive a finishing gift. This also gets you entered in the prize drawings.

It's a great opportunity to see what each shop has to offer. So why not call a friend (or two) and take a road trip.

We really hope you'll join us and look forward to seeing you.

Do you have a quilting project you'd like to start or have started but need a little help? Why not set aside time to get some help.

Aneda will be here once a month (the 2nd Thursday). She's been a quilter for decades and has knowledge of piecing, appliqué and paper piecing (machine, not English Paper Piecing EPP). This is NOT a structured class, nor should it be considered a private lesson but rather answering questions and offering help to get you going.

  • Cost: $25
  • Skill Level: N/A

In this Block-of-the-Month program, you'll be following along with Sheila as she guides you through each month's block(s).

All of your block construction will be sewn at home, but each month she'll talk about which blocks you'll be working on and how they are made. You can bring your completed block(s) the following month for a little show-and-tell.

Please note the new cost structure below.

If you're looking for a little sewing time, you might consider coming to one of our Finish-It-Friday monthly events.

ONGOING/MONTHLY
SIMPLY CINDY

Simply Cindy is a monthly hands-on class (not just a demo) where you'll make a small project. Each month Cindy will be picking something different but simple.

The class will meet the 4th Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise noted). You'll need to bring your sewing supplies including your machine. You can also bring a snack if you'd like as there will be no scheudled lunch break.

We're offering two options. $35 with the kit, $20 without. If you chose the version without the kit, you'll still need to purchase the pattern.

While beginners are welcome, you need to know how to use your sewing machine BEFORE class. You do not have to know all the in’s and out’s, but please come to class knowing at the very least how to turn your machine on, thread your machine and wind a bobbin. Also, quilting is based on using a 1/4” seam, so please make sure your machine has a 1/4” foot.

Maximum 8 people.

Dates: 4th Wednesday - June 26
Time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Cost:  $35 (includes kit); $20 (no kit provided, you bring your own supplies)
Skill Level: Beginner
Instructor(s): Cindy
Pre-class homework: N/A
Supplies: Vary according to the monthly project + basic sewing/quilting supplies

WORD OF THE MONTH

PEREGRINATION

Machine quilting each long row - up, down, up, down - on her king sized jelly roll strip quilt felt like a never ending peregrination.

DEFINITION
A journey, especially a long or meandering one.

Each week our good friends at Machine Medics come to pick up/drop off your sewing machines.

Each week Luis (with Karen's help sometimes) brings us a word and we have to figure out the definition. It's now become a source of entertainment we thought we'd share.

Thank you for supporting Family Threads Quilt Shop.
We are now in our 14th year.
We appreciate you so very much and look forward to seeing you soon.
