Family Threads News - July 2024

Family Threads Quilt Shop banner

Oh boy, it's been a hot month!

But our classroom is air conditioned, so why not reserve a seat and get started on those holiday projects? We have halloween, fall and Christmas projects in the works!

Check out our class calendar. This month Dayna will be doing a strippy zippy project and Simply Cindy will be a Basic Binding class.

We're also trying something new -  a SEWcial. We won't actually be sewing but will have some fun things going on. A bit of trivia: In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. In observance we will of course eat some ice cream! There is no charge for this (but you need to reserve a space). If you wish to stay and sew you may reserve a seat for the $5 classroom fee.

Hope to see you soon!

ONGOING/MONTHLY
SIMPLY CINDY:
HOW TO BIND A QUILT

Simply Cindy is a monthly hands-on class (not just a demo) where you'll make a small project. Each month Cindy will be picking something different but simple.

The class will meet the 4th Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise noted). You'll need to bring your sewing supplies including your machine. You can also bring a snack if you'd like as there will be no scheudled lunch break.

We're offering two options. $35 with the kit, $20 without. If you chose the version without the kit, you'll still need to purchase the pattern.

FOR JULY - you will need a walking foot and a small quilted project (either table runner or placemat) otherwise the kit will include a sample piece to learn on.

Beginners are welcome but...

  • You need to know how to use your sewing machine BEFORE class. You do not have to know all the in’s and out’s, but please come to class knowing at the very least how to turn your machine on, thread your machine and wind a bobbin.
  • You need to know how to use a rotary cutter and ruler
  • Also, for this month you'll need a walking foot (we do not sell these as there are too many different kinds).

Maximum 8 people.

Dates: 4th Wednesday - July 24
Time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Cost:  $35 (includes kit); $20 (no kit provided, you bring your own supplies)
Skill Level: Beginner
Instructor(s): Cindy
Pre-class homework: N/A
Supplies: Vary according to the monthly project + basic sewing/quilting supplies

SPECIAL EVENT
ICE CREAM SEWCIAL

Cindy's putting together this deliciously fun event in honor of July being National Ice Cream month. We'll of course be serving ice cream. She also has some non-caloric fun things planned.

Please give us a call and reserve your space. And while this isn't going to be an actual sewing event, if you want to book a seat and sew afterwards, you know, since you're already here, the cost is $5.

Maximum 20 people; 8 people if sewing

Dates: Wednesday, July 17
Time: 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Cost:  EVENT IS FREE; If you want to reserve a seat to stay and sew afterwards it's $5

CLASS
STRIPPY ZIPPY PROJECT BAG

You'll be making a project bag using 2-1/2" strips, clear vinyl and a zipper. We'll have a kit in class but this is a great project if you have leftover strips that you've been collecting.

Once you make one, you can adjust the length or even width of strips or add more and make them any size you’d like. The only constraints would come from the length of the zipper or the size of vinyl.

We require a minimum of 4 students (maximum 8) for this class to happe

Dates: Saturday, July 20
Time: 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Cost:  $27 KIT INCLUDED
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Instructor(s): Dayna Dickison

CLASS
YELLOW BRICK ROAD

Yellow Brick Road is a super simple quilt that is rotary cut and strip pieced. In this beginning quilting class Karen will be here showing you the basics. If you haven't finished the quilt top by the time you leave, you'll have enough information so that you can at home.

WORD OF THE MONTH

FOUDROYANT

When the quilters walked into Family Threads and found out we'd expanded and now have a whole second room full of fabric they had a foudroyant reaction.

DEFINITION
Rare; dazzling or stunning

Each week our good friends at Machine Medics come to pick up/drop off your sewing machines.

Each week Luis (with Karen's help sometimes) brings us a word and we have to figure out the definition. It's now become a source of entertainment we thought we'd share.

Because of you and your support we are now in our 14th year.
Thank you so much for making this possible.

We hope to you see soon.
Have a wonderful sew-filled month.
