Family Threads News - August 2024

Family Threads Quilt Shop banner

I hope you're all doing well and sewing, of course!

While Keira (pictured above) has done some garment sewing she has yet to start her first quilt. I'm trying to give her the bug so I handed her the fabric pieces and the pattern. She did a great job laying this out for me, soon it will be a quilt and a kit!

It's hard to believe school is starting and Labor Day weekend is fast approaching, by the way, we will be closed on Monday, September 2nd.

The highway construction continues and while we see progress it's going to be awhile before it's done. However, the delivery trucks mange to get us our shipments, hurray!

We'd love to see you, but if you can't make it in, check out our website or follow us on Facebook or Instagram (where Holly tries to post what comes in). We are always more than happy to ship.

Thank you for your continued support!

Holiday

We will be closed MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 for Labor Day.

Enjoy your holiday weekend.

Pumpkin Patch Quilt Show

The shop will be vending once again at the Pumpkin Patch Quilt Show.

It's an annual Quilt Show put on by the Los Banos Arts Council and features quilts galore, vendors and has raffle baskets, fresh pumpkins and so much more.

Come pick up a flyer at the shop.

DATES: September 7 & 8, 2024
HOURS: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM SATURDAY; 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM SUNDAY
WHERE: Ted Falasco Arts Center, 1105 5th Street, Los Banos, CA
FEATURED ARTIST: Dora Carey of Orange Dot Quilt

Got Scraps?

We collect scraps for Michelle who runs Sew for Love. With the help of 2,000+ volunteers, she's donated over 100,000 items to the local community, including quilts, small stuffed animals, pet beds and so much more.

With that being said, PLEASE CALL US FIRST before bringing bags of scraps.

Sometimes Michelle can't collect them or is away and our classroom quickly becomes overrun. And we just can't have that.

Whirl is a modern quilt pattern using simple half square triangle blocks and an easy foundation paper piece block to create a fun colorful statement. Pattern includes layouts for a baby quilt (about 40"x 60"), a throw quilt (about 50"x 72"), a twin size bed quilt (about 75"x 89") and a queen size bed quilt (about 90"x 111").

In person classes are great because you not only learn a new skill and learn from someone with years of experience but you also have the opportunity to make new friends, share your successes or struggles (all quilters have them whether you're new to quilting or a seasoned quilter), and learn from others' questions. All this, while learning to quilt!

While working on a small project, you'll learn how to:

  • Cut using a rotary cutter and mat
  • Learn the quilters seam
  • Baste your finished project
  • Simple machine quilting

WORD OF THE MONTH

DETENTE

It was past lunch time and the ladies were getting hangry. If a detente wasn't reached soon... let's just say rotary cutters will need to be put away.

DEFINITION
coming to an agreement; a relaxation of tension. Slang: If you always argue with your sibling, and then you start getting along better, you could humorously say that you've reached a detente.

Each week our good friends at Machine Medics come to pick up/drop off your sewing machines.

Each week Luis (with Karen's help sometimes) brings us a word and we have to figure out the definition. It's now become a source of entertainment we thought we'd share.

Thank you for supporting Family Threads Quilt Shop.
We are now in our 14th year.
We appreciate you so very much and look forward to seeing you soon.
